12v Cool Box
The price of a 12v cool box is dependent on among other things the size. The larger the coolbox the
greater the price. Obviously the advantage of the bigger size allows more things to be stored and thus kept cold. Though there are different sizes available, they are smaller
then the domestic fridge and are effectively a mini fridge.
The price is also dependent on the technology used by the fridge for it to work. Thermoelectric 12v
coolers are lower in price, you can pick up for as low as £20 ($30). A 12v coolbox that uses the
compressor technology would be significantly higher in price then ones employing thermoelectric (or
peltier) technology.
Sometimes with a cheaper thermoelectric fridge they have a tendency to be noisy and break down after
a short period of time. Given the cheaper price range of some thermoelectric fridges,
lower quality materials are used in the production which aids to the appliance reaching its end
at a rapidly rate.
A quality compressor 12v cool box on the other hand uses the same technology as the one found in your
home. A 12v coolbox using compressor technology runs off a 12 volt battery or 240 volt mains electricity
through an adaptor that comes with the cooler.
Generally it is noted that 12v coolboxes run better then then thermoelectric coolers, can work under a
greater range of temperatures and take up less resources from the battery of the motor vehicle. One
thing, however, with 12v coolbox using a compressor is it contains freon gases which can contribute to global warming and ozone damaging effects.
This is something
not seen with the 12v thermo electric cooler, it is a more eco friendly
12v fridge. However as 12v cool box is not a large fridge like the one in the home. The gases emitted would not be in large quantities as with the domestic refrigerator.
A compressor 12v coolbox incorporates a motor and pump that moves the refrigerant through the unit.
The temperatures of the refrigerant is changed through the process of heat transfer to create a cold environment suitable for refrigeration. Also 12v coolers utilising compressor technology contain moving parts which will cause vibrations and noise while in operation. This something that one will experience with a thermo electric cooler (unless it also contains a fan unit to draw away heat).
A 12v coolbox, its possible purchase one that act not only as a fridge but a freezer too. For
someone who travels frequently on perhaps camping trips, such a device will allow for the refrigeration as
well as freezing needs.
One 12v coolbox that is able to act as a refrigeration unit as well as freezer is the Waeco CoolFreeze line of fridges. They are marketed as the 'champions of the cooling league'. A appropriate tag really given the quality offered by Waeco coolers. Uses the Danfross Kompressors which is some of the best typeof compressors around. In fact, even better then many regular household compressors. Such that they are even used in boat fridges, which need to operate in tough terrains.
The outer parts are made from polypropylene plastic, to provide a tough and long lasting exterior, offers the latest technology features with turbo coolers and memory functions. Naturally when a product is able to offer so much, it will not be a cheap appliance to buy. A Waeco 12v cool box would cost just over $1000. It is, however, an appliance of real quality.
